Dressing the Part

Been talking a lot about Sight.  Had a few articles about the Self Image.  Let’s discuss looking the part.  How that inspires you and helps the casting director’s imagination.

Epic Question: “Do you dress the part for an audition?”  I think it’s a case by case scenario.  I think.  You’re a lawyer, you probably want to wear a suit.  A criminal, look a little rugged.  A policeman, well… see that’s where it gets tricky.  Uniforms and accessories… that shit… when does it become a bit too much and a bit too desperate.  Cause I hope you’re not going in there wearing a bikini or speedo (ah, whatever, could work)…

But seriously, I think, overall, it’s important to know “why” you’re dressing the part.  If the answer is you’re glamming up to help the casting director, it’s probably not working like you think it is.  First and foremost, dressing the part has to be for you the actor and you the character.  It has to inspire you to believe in the character and circumstances.  So what about wearing a suit makes you feel like a lawyer as opposed to a businessman?  What about that rugged look makes you believe you’re a criminal as opposed to homeless?  And when you get specific, you might find your inspiration is from a little messy hair, as opposed to some grand wardrobe illusion.  You might find your confidence is from a lucky tshirt as opposed to a business suit.  And if nothing tickles your belief, DON’T DO IT!  Approaching appearance this way, you’ll work against the obvious as you get more specific.  And those choices will bring the casting director or audience (or what have you) into your imagination, thus changing their own.
