Don’t Oversimplify
Yes, we want naturalistic, truthful performances. But remember that’s all relative. And when the engine is really going, you’ll be surprised at the range of truth you can have. I think being in LA, we tend to consciously and unconsciously conform to a glib, simplistic, quiet, very internal acting mood. Starting to realize that’s a trap. Even when you know it’s a trap. Somehow you still find yourself there. If you’ve been feeling this way, I’d dare say, don’t be afraid to overact– because of the fact that you’re actually probably underacting! Did that make sense? I had an acting teacher who once suggested to continue to raise the stakes and go to a deeper place even when you think it’s too big, because what our judgmental mind calls overacting or being too big (which we shouldn’t be watching ourselves anyway) might actually be one reaching the precipice of their comfort zone– which is scary and easy to step away from.
